Original story (published on May 25, 2021) follows:

The internet has always been a hub for hackers and fraudsters. With the rise of digitalization, the opportunities for fraudulent activities have also increased. Scams are prevalent in the crypto world, misleading SMS, and various other platforms. These scams can be dangerous and may result in the leakage of sensitive information.

One popular target for scammers is the social media giant, Instagram. Many Instagram users are vulnerable and can easily fall prey to these scams. Currently, there are two scams circulating on Instagram that users need to be aware of.

Tap to Get Back Into Your Instagram Account

There have been reports of texts on Instagram that prompt users to regain access to their accounts. However, these texts are likely part of a scam. While the message may appear authentic, a single tap can lead users into serious trouble.

Trend Micro Home has issued a scam alert, specifically warning about this text-based Instagram scam. The best way to avoid falling victim to this scam is to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with any third-party content. If you have been logged out or encounter any issues, rely on the Instagram app itself to guide you through the process. Instagram does not send texts or make calls for account recovery.

Another scam attempt involves text messages containing links to reset Instagram passwords. Users are receiving these password reset links via email and SMS, even when they haven’t requested any changes. This strongly suggests that someone is trying to trick users into clicking suspicious links.

Users should exercise caution and avoid clicking on such links. Links are the primary element to be wary of, and avoiding them is the best way to protect yourself from falling into the hands of hackers.

There are numerous incidents and hacking attempts taking place every day. It may sound alarming, but there is one surefire way to evade these scams.

Ways to Protect Yourself from Scams

Remaining alert is crucial. Always thoroughly examine text messages before taking any action and verify the authenticity of the source. In the case of Instagram, remember that they will never send text messages. Instagram only communicates through official emails or notifications sent directly from the app.

Enabling two-factor authentication in your Instagram settings can significantly reduce the chances of getting hacked.

We will continue to monitor and provide updates on similar scams, so stay tuned for more information.
