How to Disable MFA from Azure AD

azure disable mfa

Within Azure AD, there are three methods to configure Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

1. Disable Security Defaults

By default, Azure AD has a setting called “Security Defaults.” To enable or disable it:

  • Go to Azure Portal
  • Navigate to Azure Active Directory
  • Click on Properties
  • Scroll to “Manage security defaults” (link at the bottom of the page)
  • Enable or disable as needed

Disabling Security Defaults allows you to control MFA using other methods described below.

2. Manual Per-User MFA Configuration

You can find and configure MFA for individual users in Azure Active Directory:

  • Go to Azure Portal
  • Navigate to Azure Active Directory
  • Click on Users
  • Select per-user multifunction authentication
  • Choose the desired users
  • Set MFA to Disabled, Enabled, or Enforced

In general, it is recommended to use MFA as it improves user authentication security. However, there may be cases where you need to disable MFA for specific or all accounts. For example, a business-critical application may not function with MFA enabled, or users may prefer not to use MFA. While rare, it is still a possibility.

3. Conditional Access

If you have Azure Active Directory P1 or P2 Premium license, you can disable Microsoft Security Defaults and implement Conditional Access policies. With Conditional Access, you can enforce MFA for certain users or exclude MFA for specific accounts.

To configure Conditional Access:

  • Disable Microsoft Security Defaults
  • Implement Conditional Access policies

While it is not recommended to disable MFA entirely, you can use Conditional Access to customize MFA rules based on your organization’s needs. Strong passwords are advised to maintain a minimal level of security.
