Launching Default End-to-End Encryption on Messenger

Today, we are excited to announce the launch of default end-to-end encryption for personal messages and calls on Messenger and Facebook. This security measure, along with a suite of new features, gives you more control over your messaging experience. At Eireview, we prioritize the protection of your messages, and after years of investment and testing, we are proud to introduce a safer, more secure, and private service.

The Importance of End-to-End Encryption

Since 2016, Messenger has offered the option to enable end-to-end encryption. However, we are now changing private chats and calls across Messenger to be end-to-end encrypted by default. This decision was not made lightly. Our team of engineers, cryptographers, designers, policy experts, and product managers have dedicated themselves to rebuilding Messenger features from the ground up. Along the way, we have introduced new privacy, safety, and control features, such as delivery controls and app lock. We have also worked closely with external experts, academics, advocates, and governments to identify risks and implement mitigations, ensuring that privacy and safety go hand-in-hand.

The introduction of end-to-end encryption provides an extra layer of security, safeguarding the content of your messages and calls from the moment they leave your device until they reach the receiver’s device. This means that neither Meta nor anyone else can see what is sent or said unless you choose to report a message to us.

Exciting New Features

End-to-end encryption not only assures more secure chats in Messenger but also retains the features you love, such as themes and custom reactions. Moreover, we have added a host of new features essential to our community. While these features will be available for immediate use, it may take some time for Messenger chats to be updated with default end-to-end encryption.

Edit a Message

One of our new features allows you to edit messages that were sent too soon or that you simply want to change. You have up to 15 minutes after sending a message to make any necessary edits. It is important to note that Meta will be able to see the previous versions of the edited message if you report abuse, ensuring accountability.

Disappearing Messages

To enhance privacy further, we have implemented disappearing messages on Messenger. These messages now last for 24 hours after being sent. We have also improved the interface so that it is easier to determine when disappearing messages are turned on. This way, you can feel confident that your messages remain secure and do not linger indefinitely. Please note that disappearing messages are only available for end-to-end encrypted conversations. If you receive inappropriate content, you can still report disappearing messages, and we will notify you if someone takes a screenshot of a disappearing message.

Read Receipts Control

Our new read receipt control empowers you to decide whether others can see when you have read their messages. We value your privacy and understand that sometimes, immediate responses may not be possible or desired. By using this feature, you can reduce the pressure to respond immediately.

Photo and Video Upgrades

Photos and videos are an integral part of Messenger conversations. To improve your experience, we have made photos and videos easier to access, upgraded image quality, added fun layouts, and introduced more controls. Now, you can reply or react to any photo or video within a collection. We have ongoing tests with a small group of users for HD media and file sharing improvements, and we plan to roll them out to a wider audience in the coming months.

Voice Messaging

Voice messaging is rapidly gaining popularity, and to meet this demand, we have included several enhancements. You can now play voice messages at 1.5x or 2x speeds, pick up listening to a voice message from where you left off, and continue listening even when you navigate away from the chat or the app.

Security Engineering

At Eireview, we believe in transparency and welcome engagement with external cryptographers and security experts. As part of our commitment, we are publishing two papers outlining our approach to cryptography and how we encrypt your message history with Secure Storage. Since there are over a billion Messenger users, the global rollout of default end-to-end encryption will take several months to complete. Once your chats are upgraded, you will be prompted to set up a recovery method, such as a PIN, to ensure that you can restore your messages if you lose, change, or add a device.
