How to Edit or Remove EXIF Data From Photos

There’s no denying that we capture a lot of photos, whether it’s with a dedicated camera or a smartphone. What many of us may not realize is that these photos contain a significant amount of personal data. Each photo we take contains information about the camera used, including the make, model, settings, and even location data. This data is known as EXIF data or metadata. While EXIF data can be helpful for organizing and filtering images, it also means that when you post a photo online, your personal data is exposed to the public.

If you’re concerned about sharing your location or any other personal information, it’s a good idea to edit or remove the EXIF data from your photos. In this article, we will guide you through the process of editing or removing EXIF data on different platforms.

Windows

Windows provides a native method to edit and remove EXIF data from photos. Simply right-click on a picture and select “Properties”. In the “Details” tab, you will find the EXIF data. From here, you can edit specific details or remove the data entirely by clicking on “Remove Properties and Personal Information”.

While this method works, it has limitations. To fully edit or remove all the details, we recommend using a third-party software like BatchPurifier. After installing BatchPurifier, simply open the software, add your photos, choose the file type, and decide whether to save the edited photo as a new file or overwrite the original. BatchPurifier will “purify” your photos by removing the EXIF data. Please note that BatchPurifier only works for JPEG files.

While there are other Windows software options available for removing or editing EXIF data, we found that many of them were not reliable. Therefore, we recommend sticking with either the native Windows method or BatchPurifier for JPEG files.

Mac

On a Mac, you can easily view EXIF data but will need a third-party app to remove it. To view the EXIF data of a photo, simply open the photo in the Photos app and click on the info icon. The EXIF data, including camera details and location, will be displayed.

To remove EXIF data from photos on a Mac, you can use a third-party software called ImageOptim. This app allows you to drag and drop image files into it, and it will automatically remove the EXIF data and replace the original photo. This ensures that you don’t end up with duplicate photos.

While ImageOptim is excellent for removing EXIF data, it doesn’t offer editing capabilities. We tested various apps claiming to edit EXIF data on Mac, but unfortunately, none of them were effective.

Android

If you want to prevent your GPS information from being saved when you take a photo on Android, you can disable the geotagging feature. Most camera apps pre-installed on Android smartphones allow you to turn off the “Save location” option in the settings. Alternatively, you can go to Settings -> Apps -> Camera -> Permissions and disable “Location”.

If you want to save EXIF data but remove or edit it before sharing, you can use the Photo Exif Editor app (Free, Pro $2.99). This app allows you to select a photo and easily edit its metadata. While the app is designed to remove EXIF data, it wasn’t always reliable during our testing. The free version contains ads, but you can upgrade to the Pro version to remove them and access full RAW data.

If you simply want to remove EXIF data from photos on Android, you can use the EZ UnEXIF app (Free, Pro $0.99). Install the app, open it, add photos from your gallery or file browser, and choose whether to create a new EXIF-free copy of the photo or replace the original. The app will remove the EXIF data from the picture. The free version contains ads, but upgrading to the Pro version will remove them.

iOS

Similar to Android, you can prevent the camera app on your iPhone or iPad from adding geotags to your photos. To do this, go to iOS Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services, tap on “Camera,” and select “Never”.

iOS disable geotagging

If you want to keep the EXIF data but remove it when sharing a photo, you can use the Metadata Remover app (free with in-app purchase for the full version). This app allows you to easily remove EXIF data. Simply tap on the settings cog icon, click the “Remove Metadata” button, and the app will save a duplicate photo without any EXIF data.

For editing EXIF data on iOS, you can either upgrade to the full version of the Metadata Remover app via an in-app purchase or purchase the Metapho app ($2.99). Metapho enables you to remove metadata or edit all the details, including the date and location.

Bonus:

If you prefer not to use a third-party app to remove EXIF data on any platform, one simple and effective method is to take a screenshot of the image. Screenshots do not contain any EXIF data, so you will have a photo without metadata. Alternatively, you can edit images in different photo editing apps to manually remove EXIF data.
