Ring Bridge: When Connection Fails

Hello, Ring Neighbours and Ring Support! My name is Joe, and I’m currently based in Malaysia. Today, I’d like to share my experience with the Ring Bridge and the frustrating challenge I faced while trying to connect my Ring Smart Lights.

The Struggle to Connect

I eagerly purchased the Ring Bridge to enhance the functionality of my Ring Smart Lights. However, despite my best efforts, I could never successfully add the Ring Bridge to my network. I diligently followed all the methods suggested within the Ring community, but to no avail.

Here are just a few of the many attempts I made individually or in combination, and I tried them in different sequences:

  1. Connected my smartphone and tablet to both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks.
  2. Experimented with fixed and random IP addresses and DNS IPs.
  3. Randomized MAC addresses and even tried using my phone’s MAC address.
  4. Renamed my Wi-Fi SSID to see if that made a difference.
  5. Switched to a different Wi-Fi router altogether.
  6. Tested multiple devices including Samsung Z Fold, Samsung Note 5, Note 8, iPad Pro, iPad 2, and SONY z tablet.
  7. Inserted a pin into the Ring Bridge for 10 or 20 seconds, observing the changing LED colors from red to blue.
  8. Positioned the Ring Bridge right next to the router and even tried placing them far apart.
  9. Disabled security features and removed third-party apps from my Android devices.
  10. Explored different Wi-Fi channels ranging from 1 to 10, as well as 11 to 12, and experimented with various channel widths.
  11. Enabled or disabled Wi-Fi Direct and played around with location settings, mobile data, Bluetooth, and airplane mode.
  12. Rebooted my devices, router, and Ring Bridge multiple times.
  13. Configured my device’s Wi-Fi to directly join the Ring Bridge network before attempting to add it via the Ring App.
  14. Cleared the cache and data of the Ring App and even reinstalled it.
  15. Performed a factory reset on my tablet or smartphone, ensuring that only the Ring app was installed.
  16. Observed the Ring Bridge blinking blue and green colors.
  17. Restored my Wi-Fi router to factory settings, specifically for connecting the Ring Bridge.
  18. Disabled any known security settings or MAC address filters on the router.
  19. Changed my Wi-Fi password, and even tried using a password without any special characters.
  20. Rebooted my smartphone or tablet with location services turned on.
  21. Connected with or without using VPN services to different regions like the US, Singapore, and Malaysia.

No Solution in Sight

Unfortunately, none of the above attempts resolved the issue. The Ring app would always show a “Connection Successful” message when joining the Ring Bridge’s Wi-Fi network, but it would subsequently fail to connect to my router’s Wi-Fi. The app would then loop back to prompt me if the Ring Bridge’s blue light was blinking, and the process just went in circles. I repeated this frustrating cycle countless times, but to no avail.

I must say that this product has left me deeply disappointed as it fails to deliver out of the box. I had high hopes after investing so much into Ring products, but this experience has been disheartening. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or assistance you can offer to help resolve this issue.

Lackluster Support

To make matters worse, the support I received for this issue has been poor. Despite reaching out via email and Facebook Messenger, I received no response from Ring. Even the three-hour phone call with support did not result in a resolution. I was eventually connected with another person on the call who arranged for a replacement device. However, I was informed that I would have to return the original device, or I would be charged for the replacement. I’m hopeful that the replacement device will indeed resolve the problem; otherwise, it will have been a complete waste of time.

Thank you for taking the time to read about my frustrating experience. I believe it’s important to share such experiences to shed light on the challenges faced by users and to encourage companies like Ring to improve their products and support.
