How to Disable Smart Lock on Samsung Galaxy S20 and S20+

Samsung Galaxy S20

Android phones provide various security options, and the Samsung Galaxy S20 and S20+ are no exception. From simple lock patterns like PIN and Pattern to advanced mechanisms like Face Unlock and Fingerprint Unlock, Smart Lock offers multiple ways to secure your phone efficiently.

Smart Lock on the Samsung Galaxy S20 and S20+ is a convenient feature that saves time by automatically unlocking your phone when certain conditions are met. For example, if you have Bluetooth wireless earphones set up with Smart Lock, your phone will remain unlocked when the devices are near each other.

While Smart Lock is useful, there may be situations where it’s best to disable it, such as when you’re at work. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of turning off and deactivating Smart Lock on your Samsung S20 and Galaxy S20+.

How to Deactivate Smart Lock on Samsung S20 and S20+

Step 1: Open Settings and go to the Lock Screen module. Tap on Smart Lock, and you’ll see three options.

Step 2: Tap on the option that you previously selected, draw your pattern, and toggle the switch off.

However, there is another option worth considering. While initially using the Trusted Device feature seemed like a good idea, it kept my phone unlocked throughout the day because I always had my Bluetooth earphones with me. To address this, I disabled Trusted Device mode and instead enabled Trusted Places.

In Trusted Places, you can select your Home address, so your phone remains unlocked when you’re at home. If you have your Home address set up in Google Maps, you don’t even need to search for it. Simply lock your phone to test the changes.

Turn Off Smart Lock Temporarily

If you only want to disable Smart Lock temporarily, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open Settings > Lock screen > Secure lock Settings and enter your pattern. Enable the option to show the lockdown option.

Step 2: Swipe down to open the Quick Settings menu on your Galaxy S20. Tap on the Power button and then tap on the Lockdown icon.

Doing this will disable Smart Lock, as well as biometric unlock options like Fingerprint and Face Unlock. It will also prevent notifications from showing on the lock screen. Instead, you’ll see the pattern unlock screen. To restore normal functionality, enter your pattern.

Tweak the Lock Screen Unlock Method

The Galaxy S20 offers several lock mechanisms, with Face Unlock being one of the fastest. However, it has certain limitations, such as requiring adequate lighting and no obstructions like sunglasses. Thankfully, there are built-in methods to overcome these limitations.

Set up an Alternative Look

To use your Galaxy S20 with sunglasses or in other alternative looks, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Biometrics and security > Face Recognition.
  2. Confirm your pattern and tap on the second option to set up an alternative look.

Brighten Screen

To unlock your Galaxy S20 in low-light conditions, enable the Brighten Screen option in the Face Recognition menu. You can also enable the “Stay on Lock screen” option to remain on the unlocked lock screen instead of opening the last-used app immediately.

Lock Smart

With numerous customization and optimization options available, choose the one that suits your preferences best. In my case, I found Smart Unlock combined with improved biometrics to be reliable, fast, and efficient. Just make sure you have a reliable backup method, like Lockdown, in place.
