Troubleshooting Guide: How to Retrieve Your Printer’s Wireless Password

i forgot my hp printer wifi password

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you need to connect your printer to your wireless network, but you can’t remember the password? Don’t worry, it happens to the best of us. In this troubleshooting guide, we will walk you through the steps to retrieve your printer’s wireless password so you can get back to printing without any hassle.

Understanding the Different Passwords

When it comes to printers and wireless connections, there are two main passwords to consider:

Wireless Direct Password

The Wireless Direct password is used to connect a wireless device directly to your printer’s local WiFi network. This network is different from your home network and is only visible to devices connected to Wireless Direct. If you want to clear the Wireless Direct password, you can perform a Restore Defaults function from your printer’s control panel. This will reset the printer’s WiFi password, allowing you to set up a new one. You can find detailed steps on how to perform a Restore Defaults function in your printer’s User Guide, which is available on

Home WiFi Password

The home WiFi password is the one used to connect your printer to your home wireless network. This allows your printer to be visible to all devices on the network, both wired and wireless. To connect your printer to your home network, you will first need to confirm the current home WiFi password. Then, navigate to your printer’s control panel and explore the wireless connection options. Look for your home network and enter the WiFi password when prompted. It’s important to note that HP cannot assist you with looking up or confirming your home WiFi password, as it is a security measure.

Admin Password

The Admin password is used to access the Administrator area of the Embedded Web Server and certain restricted areas of your printer’s control panel. It is required for making administration level changes to your printer’s settings, such as adjusting security, networking, and enabling/disabling features. Resetting the Admin password requires physical access to the printer and a higher-level reset known as NVRAM or COLD reset. Each printer model has a unique Cold Reset process, which can be found in the Service Manual. If you need assistance with resetting the Admin password, we recommend reaching out to HP directly (if your printer is under warranty) or starting a thread in the forums dedicated to your specific printer model (if it is not under warranty).

Print Server Security

If your printer is connected through a Print Server, which can be a shared workstation, dedicated server, or an appliance running dedicated software, it might have additional security settings. Print Servers control access to the print queue using user IDs and passwords. These credentials are often the same ones used to authenticate users to their own machines or enterprise networks. If you have any questions or concerns about the print server security settings, it’s best to consult with your Print Server Administrator. HP cannot assist you with looking up or verifying print server security settings.

Now that we have covered the different passwords and their purposes, you should have a clear idea of how to retrieve and manage your printer’s wireless password. Keep in mind that some password resets require physical access to the printer or advanced technical knowledge. Nevertheless, with the right resources and guidance, you will be able to overcome any obstacles that come your way.
